Proved to be the fastest growing mobile phone market, India has seen mobile phone manufacturers introducing new features every day designed to redefine the user experience. India has remained a major point of focus for numerous international mobile manufacturers who see the population of 1.3 billion as a blessing in disguise. With the development of 4G enabled devices backed by low-cost 4G data services, the sales has only accelerated. While the Chinese brands Oppo, Vivo and Lenovo have taken their share in smartphone sales to 50% in the first quarter of 2017, local brands including LYF, Micromax and Intex are reported to have only 12% share of total smartphone sales. However, the Russia-based MTS (Mobile TeleSystems India), a venture of Sistema Shyam TeleServices Ltd., has been out there in the Indian market for a considerably long tether. MTS is estimated to be the largest mobile operator in Russia with 102.4 million subscribers. After being founded in 1993, it started functioning in the Moscow license zone in 1994. Even though it started its journey in India by offering connectivity, it further expanded its business to the domain of mobile phones and wireless broadband devices. Maintaining quality while offering devices at economic MTS mobile price has been their prime strength.
History of the company
Sistema is recognized as the largest public diversified corporation within Russia. After being founded in the year 1993, Sistema acquired assets in the domains of Telecommunications, Retail, Electronics, Oil and Oil products, Real estate, and Construction.
Soon they became a founder of the Vimpel Communications that pioneered the mobile telephony services in India. 1994 saw history as the company started functioning under the vision of President Eugeny Novitsky. Detaching itself from VimpelCom, the company proceeded with 40.4% stake in Mobile TeleSystems and went on to develop the company in collaboration with Deutsche Telecom. During 1995-96, Sistema acquired Initia stake in MGTS which is the leading fixed line telecoms company in Russia.
After becoming a member of the World Economic Forum during the initial years of 2000s, the company disclosed its shareholding structure. By 2003, the company had control over Comstar and Kosmos TV and participated in the Skyline Moscow Project. They have been recognized as the best corporate borrower within the territory of Eastern Europe by the Euromoney Magazine. In the year 2009, the company sold its 50.91% of Comstar-UTS stake to the MTS for $1.32 billion.
The humble beginning in India
With a subscriber base of 102.4 million, they took the bid to enter into the Indian market in 2007 as they acquired a stake of 10% in Shyam Telelink for a cash consideration amounting US $ 11.4 million. Afterwards, Sistema along with their partner Shantanu Telecom applied for UASL license in 22 telecom circles in India.
On obtaining license in 22 telecom circles across India, the MTS started their journey by beginning to provide the Indian audience with CDMA-based mobile services and made contracts with ZTE as well as Huawei for the sake of network expansion.
With its headquarter in Gurgaon, the company has served 10 million wireless subscribers and 1.95 million high speed mobile broadband customers across 1250 towns in the nation. They have also been recognized as one of the top 50 service brands within the national territory by the AC Nielsen-Economic Times Survey.
