The Tablet Market in India:
The global tablet market is not seeing much growth in the recent years. There are a few factors which resulted in deteriorating growth in the market. First of all, the processors of tablet computers are not as powerful as those of laptop PCs. That is why buyers prefer laptops for gaming and productivity purposes. Additionally, handling and carrying smartphones is easier than carrying a tablet. Nowadays, new models of smartphones are coming up with a large screen and are becoming more popular than a tablet. Since Indian market closely follows the global market trend, the sale of tablet devices is showing a downtrend in India too.
Indian customers prefer affordable tablets having 4G data enabled, running on Android platform. There are a lot of Windows-based tablet devices available in the market too. People working in the corporate sector prefer Windows-based tablets for superior productivity. The two-in-one tablets with detachable keyboards are quite popular too. Last year Gujarat government undertook a scheme ‘NAMO Tablet Sahaya Yojana’ to provide free or cheap tablets to every student in Gujarat. Lenovo distributed its tablets under this scheme and experienced around 46% growth in the third quarter of 2017. Lenovo was followed by Acer at 16% tablet market share in India. Samsung claimed the third position followed by iBall in fourth and Datawind in fifth positions.
Indian customers have started finding the uses of tablets in microfinance, food services, and healthcare companies for simplified digitalization processes and for better customer service experiences. The student community of India prefers Wi-Fi enabled or 4G-enabled tablets within the price range of INR 5000 to 10000. Devices falling in a higher price range appeal most to the consumers from the corporate world. Most of the renowned tablet vendors are going to release newest models of feature-packed devices this year. This will definitely boost the market growth for tablet computers.
About the company:
Amazon, officially named as Amazon.com, Inc., is an American ecommerce and cloud computing company. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Amazon was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos. Initially it was named as Cadabra Inc., which was later changed to Amazon the next year. On basis of revenue and market share, it is the world’s best online retailer, and on basis of total sales, Amazon has only Alibaba ahead of it. In different countries Amazon has separate retail websites. Amazon.com started its business as an online bookstore and gradually included five most promising products like, CDs, computer hardware, computer software and videos. In 1997, the famous bookstore Barnes & Nobles sued Amazon for claiming the “world’s largest bookstore”, and according to them Amazon was “not a bookstore at all. It’s a book broker”.
Amazon.com’s product line includes books, DVD, music CDs, videotapes, software, apparels, baby products, consumer electronics, beauty products, gourmet food, groceries, health and personal-care items, jewellery, sporting equipment and gears, musical instruments, toys and games, Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Fire TV, etc. Buyers and users are welcomed to post their review of the product purchase as well as on Amazon services. Even the negative reviews about a product is also posted on the website to help public to have an overall idea about a product. Another useful feature available with Amazon is “look inside” option before buying a book. Several third party sellers also sell their products on Amazon.
Amazon overtook Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the US in 2015. Currently, Amazon is the 4th most valuable company in the world. In 2017 Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market. Over 40 subsidiary companies are owned n\by Amazon, such as, Goodreads, Diapers.com, Zappos, Shopbop etc.
History of the company in India:
Amazon.com started its Indian subsidiary website Amazon.in in 2013. Next year, when India’s one of the topmost ecommerce company Flipkart raised USD 1 billion in a funding round on par with Facebook, Amazon promised that it would invest an additional USD 2 billion “to support its rapid growth and continue to enhance the customer and seller experience in India”. Amazon.in is aiming a growth of USD 50 billion by the year 2020 and has already started investing heavily for improvements in its logistics department and for increasing the number the catalogue offered to its Indian consumer base. Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos expects that Amazon’s Indian market growth will be the fastest. In 2016 Amazon invested another USD 3 billion in India. Interestingly, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the US India Business Council’s global leadership award to Jeff Bezos. Bezos told the media, “This is a recognition of the fact that we have already created some 45000 jobs in India and continue to see huge potential in the Indian economy”. Amazon’s decision to invest was seen as a vote of confidence for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2017 Amazon further added ₹ 2000 crore to Indian investment, out of which ₹ 130 crore was for the Amazon’s payment and wallet department Amazon Pay. Recently, in January 2018, Amazon an additional sum of ₹ 2000 crore was invested in Indian arm by Amazon.com.
Amazon has started building Amazon Development Centre in Hyderabad, India and this 30 lakh square-feet facility, the biggest campus outside the US will be ready by 2019. Once fully operational, Amazon is expected to employ 14000 people in this campus.
